I loved this episode sooooooo much! There was a ton of really great stuff in it that I absolutely adored and some stuff that was so-so...but basically, it was pretty great. My thoughts on the different s/ls running throughout this awesome episode...
Stefan/Klaus/”I Wanna Make Hybrids!” s/l—I don’t really understand Klaus’s need to make more of himself b/c he’s lonely. He’s got his whole family daggered in some coffins and he’s wondering why nobody likes him. The hell? I get that he feels like he’s the only hybrid in the world…and…well, he is b/c his mom was apparently a faithless whore. Whatever, get over it. You’re a super cool hybrid thing! Have a little fun…why do you want a bunch of other yous running around stealing your thunder?! UNIQUE IS GOOD. Embrace it. Christ. You big baby.
And I get that Stefan is supposed to be all big and bad because he’s running around with Klaus feeding on human livestock…and I’m supposed to be all “Oooh! He’s bad now!” Except, he’s really not. The only reason he’s doing any of this is to save his brother and Elena. The only reason he’s staying with Klaus is because he promised him that he would. Really, show? He’s with Klaus, feeding on humans and trying to make hybrids b/c he said that he would. And I guess, Stefan never breaks his word? That’s noble and heroic and…not at all what Julie, Kevin and Paul sold me on what was going to happen this season. I want to see some mayhem! I want to see Stefan enjoying himself and, like, ripping people to shreds like I was promised! So far, Stefan is just…quippier. He quips a lot. I’m not impressed…yet. I fully expect to see some more Bad!Stefan after the next episode…where, hopefully, Stefan throws Elena into a wall to officially break up with her. Heh. That would be AWESOME.
Jeremy/Bonnie—Umm…he sees ghosts? Whatever. I like Anna a lot more now that she’s dead and interesting. I didn’t really have an opinion on her when she was alive, altho, I really felt for her towards the end of the season when Uncle Ass killed her for no fucking reason. That was annoying, so I’m glad that he’s dead. I’m glad that Jeremy told Bonnie that he was seeing his dead ex-girlfriends (altho, can you really call it a breakup when both of them died?) even tho I’m not so glad that Bonnie’s back. I hate her. I’ll get into my reasons for that when I start blogging episodes from S1 and S2. I’m mildly interested in what’s happening here, altho the s/l would be much more interesting if Bonnie wasn’t in it. Because I hate her. I would like to see more of Vicki, just b/c I really enjoyed Kayla Ewell from before, for no particular reason besides the fact that she was an original cast member who had a short shelf life.
Damon/Alaric—I always enjoyed their weird friendship until this episode. I get that Ric is now the Gilberts de facto guardian and he’s going to take that job seriously now…but I don’t really understand his dislike of the Damon/Elena friendship. Hell, I love the fact that he’s noticed that there is something there to notice, and I didn’t mind his “ you need to take a beat from Elena” thing b/c A)he looked SO uncomfortable saying it and B) HE NOTICED DELENA! THE BATTLE HAS BEGUN! WEEEEE! DELENAFTW! And I don’t even mind him being upset that Damon killed him again b/c seriously, Damon? You could have just punched him in the face or thrown him aside or whatever. Snapping his neck was a little extreme. What I do mind, however, is his big snotty “I’m gonna join the Watchers Council so I can look out for Team!Human b/c I’m mad at my best friend!”-crapfest he threw at the end of the episode. Look, Ric, you were perfectly okay with Damon killing you before, and that was before he even knew you had a magic ring! Damon made sure he was wearing his ring before he did anything, and I’m sure that he would have stuck to punching him out if he hadn’t been wearing the ring…otherwise, he wouldn’t have brought it up in the first place, or shown his concern when Alaric didn’t come back to life as quickly as he should have.
Damon--Speaking of which, I don’t understand everyone’s sudden “Damon is bad news, Elena. Beware…BEWAAAARRRE!” crap. Firstly, Damon has been perfectly fine for awhile now. About midseason2, Damon stopped having his existential crises, and became a full member of Team!Supernatural. He was the one that came up with plans that actually made sense (deciding not to trust Elijah’s shady elixir of life, realizing that stopping Klaus’s plans to kill the doppleganger was going to involve more than Elena’s plan of “A wing and a prayer”, being willing to sacrifice Bonnie to save THE REST OF THE TOWN, etc) and he’s been trying just as hard to get Stefan back from the NotReallyADarkside-side even tho he’s in love with his brother’s girl. He hasn’t fed on human livestock in like, forever. He’s actually been pretty damn stable…so everyone’s need to suddenly “handle” him makes no sense…and I’m glad he said something about it. He’s a goddamn grown-assed vampire! And he hasn’t done a goddamn vampire-y thing in a long time. He’s made some chili, made fun of Elena, and told her that hanging onto Stefan’s necklace proves that she’s not over a damn thing. That’s it. I’m glad he got a little pissed at his friends thinking that putting vervain in the town’s drinking water was a good idea. Hello! The people who drink water also donate blood, right? So if they are ingesting vervain laced water, that means they are donating vervain laced blood…HOW DO THEY EXPECT DAMON OR CAROLINE TO EAT?! Then there’s Tyler…who can taste the vervain…is he never supposed to drink coffee, or juice or tea again?!
Apparently…Team!Supernatural should just live on milk.
WTF.
Then, them getting all upset about him wanting to kill Bill. Okay…lets look at this as if it wasn’t Caroline’s father.
A man comes in to town and tortures the shit out of Caroline b/c he wants to “fix” her so that she’ll associate vampirism with pain. She’s rescued, but instead of killing him, Team!Supernatural decides to just compel him to leave town. Damon volunteers and attempts to compel said man to leave town. Said man is impervious to compulsion, goes to the Watcher’s Council meeting and Neeners everyone there about how he can’t be compelled, and if they don’t do what he wants them to do, he’s going to tell everyone that there are vampires and werewolves in town, causing said town to rise up and try to kill Caroline, Tyler and Damon. Maybe they’ll even go after those crazy Bennett witches while they’re at it.
In any other circumstance, Alaric, Elena, Jeremy and probably Bonnie, would be all “Hold the fucking phone…we can’t let that happen!”…but b/c the crazy man is Caroline’s father…suddenly he’s not a threat to the lives of Team!Supernatural?!
He tortured his own daughter for like, 2 days!
Secondly…Damon does not do blackmail. He just doesn’t. You don’t come to his town and act like you have the right to threaten him. It’s the same attitude he had with Uncle Ass, with Isobel, with Katherine and now with Caroline’s father. He will cut a bitch.
Why should it be okay for Damon to just allow himself to be threatened because it’s Caroline’s father and they all know him? It makes no sense, and I’m glad that Damon stood up for himself…and the other members of Team!Supernatural when he said that he was going to handle Bill.
Besides that, he A)had no intention of killing him, and B)wasn’t even that pissed off when Caroline got in his face about hurting her dad. I love how the fight between Caroline and Damon went down, since that was a huge worry I had—that in their effort to make Caroline all BAMF, they’d ignore the fact that Damon is stronger, older and more BAMF than Caroline could ever be. Which I don’t know why I was worried, since it was clear that Damon’s only interest was in teaching Bill a lesson, and he let Caroline have her little snit fit, since he wasn’t even that angry. Plus, when Caroline realized that Damon was about to get really angry…she grabbed her dad and got the hell out of Dodge. That whole thing made complete sense to me and I loved it. I don’t know why I doubt the writers of TVD…they never fail me. Not really. Sometimes superficially…but never really.
Katherine—is BAMF. The mother-fucking end.
Damon/Elena—I loved the opening scenes with them just getting along and teasing each other while making the horrible Gilbert Family chili. For awhile now, we’d heard from the actors that what Elena gets from Damon that she doesn’t get from Stefan is that he makes her smile. He may ruin her life occasionally, but he makes her smile and laugh, which is something that she needs after having to date the most boring vampire EVER.
I like Stefan…really, I do. I even liked him a lot when he and Elena first started dating…but he became such an sanctimonious bore after about the 12th episode of the first season. I’m tired of him acting like he’s sooo much better than Damon b/c he doesn’t drink human blood. Especially since these aren’t Twilight vampires where they have to drain their victims completely (I hate Twilight, btw.) He doesn’t have to live on bunny blood alone…he just can’t handle his liquor. And that’s lame. Really, really, really lame. Plus, like I stated before, Damon’s been drinking from blood bags for awhile now…and no one seems to go up in arms when Caroline drinks from a blood bag…orrr…accidentally kills some poor carney.
But I digress.
Anyways, I loved seeing their closeness, just like I loved seeing Elena drinking from Damon’s glass in The Birthday…mainly b/c of the familiarity between the two that it showed. He may be a dick to everyone else, but it’s these small moments between them where you see that Damon is really just a big softie. A crazy, impulsively violent softie.
I also loved the argument between the two after Damon let Caroline leave with her father (I firmly believe that he let her leave, since if Damon was seriously angry, he would have just followed them and then killed both of them.) b/c Damon’s right. This whole idea that Elena wants Damon to be a better vampire makes no sense. He already IS a good vampire. He doesn’t kill randomly anymore, he’s drinking blood from blood bags, he’s not randomly compelling people to do his bidding (unless Team!Supernatural ask him to), and he’s taking care of his brother girlfriend while said brother goes around murdering people up and down the eastern seaboard. He’s not going to act like he doesn’t enjoy human blood either, which is what everyone seems to think makes you “good”. Caroline enjoys human blood too, but no one’s telling her to be a better vampire. What everyone seems to want him to be is to be like Stefan, and mea culpa and beat his breast about his “curse” all goddamn day. And where’s the fucking fun in that?
Stefan forced this life on him (the vampire-ness) and Damon is a master of making the best of a bad situation, so I’m glad that he’s not apologetic on the fact that he’s a fucking vampire. No one’s asking Caroline to be upset about her vampire-ness. Everyone’s telling Tyler to just accept his werewolf curse and not deny “who he really is”. Hell, everyone wants Stefan to just stop killing random extras and come home…but Damon’s the one that needs to “get control of himself”? Fuck off, dudes. He’s fine.
It was an argument that was a long time coming, and I’m glad that it also led into Elena fessing up that she really wasn’t that upset with him b/c she’s got feelings for him. If she can overlook Stefan’s killing spree promise…she can overlook Damon’s quirks too. Hell, with TVD…the motto is “if everyone survives, all is forgiven.”
I call that a win, folks.
So…yeah…I really loved this episode a lot. There were a lot of surprises and a lot of really good moments that did my Delena-loving heart good. I love angst, so I can’t wait to see what happens next week with Damon out of town in Stefan and Klaus in town. I want to see some mayhem.
